We had been FT RVers and "settled" in a waterfront home "out in the sticks" of Northern Maine for two years. Way too slow here. I grew up on the family sail boat in and on the Chesapeake Bay. Now my wife and I would love to sell or trade our waterfront home for a sailboat to live FT on the water. Know of anyone wanting to go back to dry land, but still be on the quiet waterfront; please send them my way! There is a $1111 FF and the full details and listing available at:
soujourn@yahoo.com
Thanks

Forgot to mention that I'm glad I stumbled across your site. Seems there's a lot of good stuff here.

People interested in houseboats, shantyboats, living aboard, retiring in Panama, etc., might want to check out my blog while they're at it.

Good job on the houseboat article. I've lived and worked on all kinds of boats myself. Had a "shack on pontoons" in Chalmette, LA, a Kaiser26 sailboat (btw, I think the Calalina is a floating piece of crap even if it was free and having worked on boats as a licensed captain for 18 years and spent another 12 years repairing boats I think I can speak with a bit or authority). Anyway, I single-handed the Kaiser from Fort Lauderdale to Guatemala and back. I was skipper of a 65' Hatteras in NOLA for several years and on an 85' sailboat on the French Riviera for three years before sailing it to Fort Lauderdale.

I just received my Pensionado Visa in Panama and intend on moving down there and building a houseboat along the lines of the Brandy Belle, seen here:

Hello there all. Does anyone know the legalities concerning living aboard on land. My wife and I live aboard out 43' Viking, Marina del Rey, CA. but would like to buy land and build an environmentally friendly home. We figure that while we build our eco-home we can live on our boat on the lot. We would also like to keep it on the property to use as an office or guest house. Any thoughts? Thank you.

We have made an offer on a 55′ kingscraft, all aluminum house boat and anticipating year around liveboard. I am getting “cold feet” about this deal because we live in Minnesota. Any advise from those who are doing it?

It's not all bleak. The economy causes people to abandon luxuries, and boating is just pure luxury to many. In SoCal, the best option is often to identify a boat that will come with a slip. Do your research on the marina and be sure that you won't run into trouble being aboard. I am aware of two of these transactions lately.

Mark, I saw, in your blog, that you are in Los Angeles area, so I thought I'd ask: are boats available to live on in any Marina from Los Angeles to Orange county. I am interested in finding a sail boat, preferably, or power boat that I could live on. the only catch is that I don't actually want to own a boat. Is the possibility of finding this so far remote, it's laughable; or are there situations out there? I do not want a boat mate either.

I'm waiting your sage nautical advice...
